Originally a County Poor Farm

Our home was built in 1898 as the County Hospital for County dependants on the Meade County Poor Farm.

According to the research to date, there were up to 12 county dependents and the caregivers residing here. The well drilled the same year is still working to water our lawn.

The County Poor Farm site was originally 80 acres. It was a working farm with the residents providing part of the labor. There was another hospital on the property. It was called a detention hospital and was used to care for people quarantined with contagious diseases. It was later converted to a private home.

. There were also four separate houses on the property that were built for families. The various outbuildings have become mere memories.

Later History

The property on which the house is on was declared surplus during the 40's. I am the fourth private owner.

The interior of the building was extensively remodeled during the 50's and 60's. So far I have been unable to determine the original floor plan.

Research will be on-going. A few photos have been discovered, and we are hoping to find more.
